This false-color image of one of our polished thin sections was achieved with an electron microprobe. The colors have been assigned by computer according the the chemistry of the minerals. This view shows the distribution of aluminum in the rock. The mineral with the highest Al content (white in the photo) is the recently discovered mineral "boralsilite" (named for boron, aluminum and silicon). Other minerals in this sample, in order of decreasing aluminum, are dumortierite (large red patches), werdingite (small red patches scattered from lower left to upper right), grandidierite (yellow), secondary mica (green), plagioclase (blue), K-feldspar (dark purplish-blue), and quartz (black). Specimen is from Rogaland, southwestern Norway.
